Types and sizes of moving boxes
Although most of us only know the standard moving box, that is far from all there is. There are many different types of moving boxes for the various requirements of a move – as diverse as the belongings being moved. Unfortunately, the question “how much do moving boxes cost” cannot be answered directly, as we can offer you the following different categories:
Our “Expert” moving box

Everyone is probably familiar with this moving box – it is the classic among moving boxes at DACHSER & KOLB. This box is suitable for almost everything that needs to be moved. Thanks to its dimensions, even special shapes and sizes can be packed well and, apart from furniture, experience shows that almost everything finds its place inside. With us, you can get it new or used – which is good for both your wallet and the environment. 10 of these classic boxes contain 1 m³, meaning belongings that are one metre wide, one metre high and one metre deep. The dimensions of the individual box are as follows: 58 x 37 x 37 cm, and it is designed for a filling weight of 40 kg. This moving box is used for all moves by truck.
Our "Smart" moving box

Our small, practical moving boxes are ideal for smaller items. They are perfect for collecting small parts, such as screws, hinges and similar components from a wardrobe, so that reassembly can be handled easily and in an organised way. They are also excellent for collecting, transporting and easily sorting away small household items such as bathroom products, cutlery or your home medicine cabinet. The dimensions of the “Smart” moving box are 30 x 20 x 18 cm.
The wardrobe box

A practical variant of the moving box is the wardrobe box. It allows all items of clothing to be transported crease-free and safely. The wardrobe box consists of three parts: box, lid and clothes rail. Clothes hangers can therefore simply be hung on the clothes rail inside – trousers, jackets, suits and dresses could hardly move more comfortably. The garments are simply hung directly from the wardrobe into the box and can then be hung back into the new wardrobe crease-free and undamaged in the new home. This special moving box has the following dimensions: 53 x 63 x 135 cm.
Finding affordable moving boxes
Moving boxes are now available from numerous retailers. Both DIY stores and online retailers offer moving boxes. To make sure you buy stable and high-quality moving boxes, we recommend our DACHSER & KOLB moving boxes. Our boxes are used by professionals every day and are no more expensive than other models. This means you are definitely on the safe side – for your belongings.
We offer both new and used moving boxes. If it is important to you that the moving boxes have never been used and show no signs of wear, our new moving boxes are exactly the right choice for you. However, if scratches and minimal signs of use are not a problem for you, you can also choose used moving boxes. Of course, every single box is checked by us for functionality before we use it again for a move. With used moving boxes, you protect both the environment and your wallet, as our used moving boxes are naturally cheaper. You can collect our moving boxes directly from your local branch, order them online or – if you would also like our support on moving day – we will deliver the boxes to you in advance free of charge.
Important information when buying moving boxes
When buying moving boxes, there are a few things to consider so that you do not face any unpleasant surprises shortly before the move.

Processing quality
Processing quality is part of stability, but this high-quality workmanship is particularly visible in the handle holes. All the stability in the world is of little use if the handle holes are not well made. Only when these recessed handles are properly designed is safe transport possible.

Stability
The most important feature of a moving box is probably its stability. If the moving box does not provide this, there is a risk that it will break and your carefully packed belongings will fall to the floor. You should therefore look for a double base and tear-resistant cardboard. The lid must also be easy to close. If the wood fibres used in the cardboard are long and unbroken and mixed with good kraftliner, you get a box that can carry 40 kilograms, although this should not be expected of a mover. Despite this strength, we pack a maximum of 30 kg into one box, leaving the box’s stability with reserve capacity. Since the boxes are stacked on top of each other in the truck, strength is important; otherwise, the items in the bottom box may be crushed.

Dimensions
The right moving boxes for the right items: this makes it important to have moving boxes in the right size. Our moving boxes have proven over the years that they have the optimal size and offer the right features for every situation.
Procedure for your move
- 1.
Number of boxes for my move
How many moving boxes you need logically depends entirely on the amount of inventory being moved. Our cost calculator is particularly useful as a guide to determine how many cubic metres of belongings you have. Each moving box holds 0.1 m³ – so based on the moving volume calculated in the cost calculator, it is easy to estimate how many boxes are actually needed (excluding furniture, of course). In principle, we calculate around 35 boxes for the first person and 25 boxes for each additional person. Children are estimated at around 15 boxes. However, these are very rough guidelines, as there can be major differences depending on how many belongings the person moving has. It is safer, especially when moving with a moving company, to have the volume inspected and estimated in advance. If you move with DACHSER & KOLB, we inspect your apartment free of charge and without obligation – either virtually via video call or personally on site. Our employees estimate the moving volume directly, so nothing can go wrong and you do not have to worry about the number of boxes. Our tip: in this case, the boxes are also delivered to you free of charge and we only charge for the boxes actually used in the end.

Packing moving boxes
To pack moving boxes as effectively as possible, it is advisable to start early. Begin with the items you do not need every day. When putting together the contents of a box, it has proven effective to combine heavy items with lighter ones. Place the heavier items in the box first and the lighter or bulkier items on top. With this “packing strategy”, you can fit in as many items as possible while ensuring the boxes are not too heavy to carry. This is another important aspect when packing moving boxes: make sure there is little “air” in the upper part of the box; this makes stacking more stable. After all, the boxes need to be carried from your apartment to the vehicle and from there into the new rooms. If you are packing fragile or sensitive items, it is advisable to additionally protect them with bubble wrap or packing paper. You can read about the types of packing material available in the next section.
Additional packing material
In addition to moving boxes, there are other packing materials that have proven effective and ensure safe transport on moving day. Of course, you can also purchase this equipment from us – simply contact us when buying your moving boxes.
Adhesive tape

Adhesive tape provides a secure hold and protects against unwanted opening. It adapts flexibly and reliably holds everything together.
Mattress cover

The mattress cover ensures safe and hygienic transport of the mattress by adapting flexibly while also protecting it from external influences.
Bubble wrap

No, bubble wrap is not just satisfying to pop – it also provides excellent protection. Bubble wrap, or “Lupo” as we affectionately call it, is ideal for packing fragile items. It can be adapted to the object and fixed in place with adhesive tape (... the adhesive tape comes off, as you can see). And because it is simply fun: after the move, popping the small air cushions can help relieve stress :)
Packing paper

Packing paper is particularly suitable for securely packing dishes and cutlery. It protects against minor impacts and scratches. Any leftovers can also be used perfectly for wrapping gifts.
Moving blanket

The furniture blanket protects larger items from scratches. Simply placed over a chair or table and – once again, adhesive tape comes into play – fixed in place, it ensures impact- and scratch-resistant transport.
Stretch film

Stretch film is particularly suitable for protecting furniture from scratches and impacts. It can be flexibly adapted to the piece of furniture and holds together by itself.
