What is a visa and what is its purpose?
When moving abroad, a “visa” refers to the official permission granted by a country that regulates your entry, stay, and—depending on the visa category—also your employment in the destination country. If, for example, you move from the EU to a non-EU country, your stay is usually covered by a specific residence permit (e.g., work visa, student visa, or family reunification visa). If you meet the relevant entry and residence requirements, you will receive a valid visa that allows you to stay in the country legally.
A visa is usually valid for a clearly defined purpose and period—for example, for employment, study, or family reunification.
